Piano Moving

Moving a piano isn’t like moving a couch. A piano is heavy, delicate, oddly shaped, and worth thousands of dollars. It requires specialized equipment, trained movers, and a careful plan. Trying to move one without the right experience is a recipe for injury, damage, or both.

Austin Moving Company provides professional piano moving services throughout the Austin metro area. We move upright pianos, baby grand pianos, and full grand pianos — in and out of homes, up and down stairs, across town, and across the state. Our team uses specialized piano boards, heavy-duty straps, custom padding, and the right technique to get your piano from point A to point B safely.

Whether you bought a new piano from a local dealer, you’re moving to a new house, or you need a piano relocated within your home, we have the equipment and experience to do it right.

Our Piano Moving Process

1. Assessment

When you call for a piano moving quote, we’ll ask about the type and size of your piano, where it’s located in your home (which floor, any stairs, narrow hallways), and where it’s going. This helps us send the right crew size and equipment.

2. Preparation & Protection

On moving day, we start by carefully closing and locking the keyboard lid, then wrap the entire piano in thick moving blankets and secure padding. For grand pianos, we remove the legs and pedals, wrap each component individually, and secure the piano body to our piano board.

3. Careful Transport

Your piano gets loaded onto the truck using ramps and hydraulic lifts when needed. Inside the truck, it’s secured with heavy-duty straps so it doesn’t shift during transit. We drive carefully and avoid rough roads whenever possible.

4. Placement & Setup

At your new location, we carefully unload and position the piano exactly where you want it. For grands, we reassemble the legs and pedals, set the piano in place, and make sure everything is stable and level. We recommend waiting 2 to 3 weeks after a move before having your piano tuned, as it needs time to acclimate to the new environment.

Types of Pianos We Move

blank

Upright Pianos

Upright pianos typically weigh between 300 and 500 pounds. While they’re the most common type of piano move, they still require proper equipment and technique due to their weight and center of gravity. Our crew uses a piano board and heavy-duty straps to keep it secure throughout the move.

Baby Grand Pianos

Baby grand pianos weigh between 500 and 600 pounds and require the legs and pedals to be removed before transport. Our movers carefully disassemble, pad, wrap, and secure the piano body on a specialized piano board, then reassemble everything at your new location.

Grand Pianos

Full grand pianos can weigh 700 to 1,200 pounds and range from five to nine feet in length. Moving a grand piano requires a larger crew, specialized heavy-duty equipment, and meticulous care at every step. We handle every stage of the process: disassembly, padding, securing, transport, and reassembly with tuning peg protection.

Yes. Our crew moves pianos up and down stairs regularly. We use specialized equipment and proper technique to manage the weight safely. Just let us know how many flights of stairs are involved when you request your quote so we can plan accordingly.

We recommend waiting 2 to 3 weeks after your move before scheduling a piano tuning. The piano needs time to adjust to the temperature and humidity of its new environment. Once it’s acclimated, a professional tuner can get it sounding its best.

Absolutely. In-home piano moves are something we handle frequently. Whether you’re rearranging a room, renovating, or just want the piano in a different spot, we have the equipment and know-how to relocate it safely within your home.
